TPCASTT Analysis of Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Ocean

The Ocean

Nathaniel Hawthorne

The Ocean has its silent caves,

Deep, quiet, and alone;

Though there be fury on the waves,

Beneath them there is none.

The awful spirits of the deep

Hold their communion there;

And there are those for who we weep,

The young, the bright, the fair.

Calmly the wearied seamen rest

Beneath their own blue sea.

The ocean solitudes are blest,

For there is purity.

The earth has guilt, the earth has care,

Unquiet are its graves;

But peaceful sleep is ever there,

Beneath the dark blue waves.

TPCASTT Analysis

Title

At first after reading the title, I predicted this poem would be about feelings of emptiness or sadness that are so deep with ocean as a metaphor.

Paraphrase

There are quiet caves in the ocean.

Deep, silent, and solitary;

Even if the waves are raging,

There is nothing beneath them.

The dreadful deep spirits

There, they can have their communion.

There are also those for whom we grieve.

The adolescent, the cheerful, the righteous

The weary seamen relaxes calmly.

Their own blue sea underneath them.

The serenity of the ocean is a blessing,

Because there is purity.

The earth is guilty, and the earth is concerned.

Its tombs are eerily quiet.

However, restful slumber is never there

Underneath the ominous dark blue waters.

Connotation

Rhyme scheme: ABABCDCD

Metaphor:

- Caves: Refers to the graves

- Fury: Refers to the existence/life

Symbolism:

- Rest and sleep: The words ''Rest" and "Sleep" here is a representative of the death

- Blue sea: The word "Blue sea" here as a representative of heaven or nirvana

Symbolism and metaphors:

- The ocean solitude are blest: The solitude of the ocean is considered the only blessing or gift for the marines who are buried in this sea.  If the gifts for others who are buried on the earth there are prayers and flowers, then the only gift for sailors is solitude in this ocean.

Attitude

The attitude used is serious, melancholic, sarcastic, sorrowful, relieved, ironic, and guilty.  This tone describes how the author tells about the ocean that so deep and wide as a graveyard for sailors, without tombstones and garlands.  Even though there is so much life up there, there is nothing for the people we cry over.  Even so the sailors could rest in peace and have their own paradise.

Shifts

Line 2 to 3: Line 2 end with melancholy tone, tone shifts to sarcastic in line 3, which end with serious tone.

Line 3 to 4: Line 3 end with serious tone, tone shifts to sorrow in line 4, which end with sorrow tone.

Line 9 to 10: Line 9 end with relieved tone, tone shifts in line 10, which end with sorrow tone.

Line 10 to 11: Line 10 end with sorrow tone, tone shifts in line 11, which end with irony tone.

Line 13 to 14: Line 13 end with guilty tone, tone shifts in line 14, which end with sorrow tone

Line 14 to 15: Line 14 end with sorrow tone, tone shifts in line 15, which end with relieved tone.

Title

After reading the poem to the end, I realized that the title of this poem refers to a grave without a tombstone or a wreath that is just an ocean.  The ocean that so wide and deep that it became a graveyard for sailors.

Theme

The theme is death and isolation for sailors.  Isolation here means because the last place for the sailors to rest is in a sea that is so deep, wide and far from other human life

Figurative Languages in Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Ocean

 The Ocean

Nathaniel Hawthorne

The Ocean has its silent caves,

Deep, quiet, and alone;

Though there be fury on the waves,

Beneath them there is none.

The awful spirits of the deep

Hold their communion there;

And there are those for who we weep,

The young, the bright, the fair.

Calmly the wearied seamen rest

Beneath their own blue sea.

The ocean solitudes are blest,

For there is purity.

The earth has guilt, the earth has care,

Unquiet are its graves;

But peaceful sleep is ever there,

Beneath the dark blue waves.

Figurative languages found in the poem above are:

1. Personification

The personification figurative language here are:

- 'The Ocean'. The author gave almost a conscience to it by making it the only word that is capitalized in the poem as if it's 'alive' and able to do things; have its silent caves.

- 'The awful spirits of the deep' here is described to hold their communion there, which is a personification where it means deep in the sea, there are many things happening, many creatures, almost like they have their own communion.

- 'The earth has guilt, the earth has care' is a personification that means the earth has its own good and bad side. The earth or the surface of the ocean is where humans experience their lives and emotions.

2. Metaphor

- Though there be fury on the waves,

Beneath them there is none.

The couplet above are a metaphor of beneath a chaotic surface, there is serenity and peace.

- But peaceful sleep is ever there,

Beneath the dark blue waves.

The couplet above are a metaphor of silence and peace in the deep of the sea, for those who we weep (in the previous stanza).

3. Euphemism

- Calmly the wearied seamen rest

Beneath their own blue sea.

The couplet above is an example of euphemism, where "the seamen rest beneath their own blue sea" actually means people who died in the sea.

Unsur-unsur Puisi dalam The Dove karya John Keats

 The Dove

John Keats

I had a dove, and the sweet dove died,

And I have thought it died of grieving;

O what could it grieve for? Its feet were tied

With a silken thread of my own hand's weaving;

Sweet little red feet! Why would you die?

Why would you leave me, sweet bird, why?

You liv'd alone on the forest tree,

Why, pretty thing, could you not live with me?

I kiss'd you oft, and gave you white peas;

Why not live sweetly as in the green trees?

Unsur-unsur

  • Bunyi

I had a dove, and the sweet dove died, (A)

And I have thought it died of grieving; (B)

O what could it grieve for? Its feet were tied (A)

With a silken thread of my own hand's weaving; (B)

Sweet little red feet! Why would you die? (C)

Why would you leave me, sweet bird, why? (C)

You liv'd alone on the forest tree, (D)

Why, pretty thing, could you not live with me? (D)

I kiss'd you oft, and gave you white peas; (E)

Why not live sweetly as in the green trees? (E)

  • Diksi

I had a dove, and the sweet dove died,

And I have thought it died of grieving;

O what could it grieve for? Its feet were tied

With a silken thread of my own hand's weaving;

    Baris "I had a dove, and the sweet dove died." mewakilkan sesuatu yang berharga. Karena penyair menggunakan makhluk hidup sebagai metafora, maka dapat diartikan 'the dove' yang dimaksud adalah seseorang. Ia memiliki seseorang, namun lalu orang itu pergi meninggalkannya.

    Selanjutnya adalah "Its feet were tied" dan "With a silken thread of my own hand's weaving;". Dua hal ini melambangkan cinta yang egois dari sang penyair. Ia pikir 'tying its feet' adalah sebuah bentuk pengungkapan cinta, namun nyatanya hal itu hanya merugikan kekasihnya, dan itu alasannya kekasihnya tersebut pergi.

I kiss'd you oft, and gave you white peas;

Why not live sweetly as in the green trees?

    Selanjutnya, dengan baris "I kiss'd you oft, and gave you white peas;", ia kira ia sudah memberikan segalanya untuk kekasihnya itu, namun ia tetap pergi. Lalu "Why not live sweetly as in the green trees?" menggambarkan pertanyaan penyair yang terkesan bingung mengapa kekasihnya pergi setelah semua yang ia lakukan untuknya.

  • Citra

...Its feet were tied

With a silken thread of my own hand's weaving;

menunjukkan citraan rabaan (tied) dan gerak (thread of my own hand's weaving)

I kiss'd you oft, and gave you white peas;

menunjukkan citraan rabaan (kiss'd you oft) dan citraan gerak (gave you white peas)

  • Bentuk

News Plagiarism

 What is plagiarism?

Well, basically, plagiarism means recreating something similar that has existed earlier without permission, and without giving credits to the original owner. Almost any art or writings could be plagiarized. Starting from stories, movies, music, or even news.

For the past few years, the news industry has been evolving really fast, thanks to technological advances which also evolve rapidly. The rapid information traffic then requires companies to work faster, including in producing news. They have to serve fresh news every day in order to stay in lane. But what happens if a journalist is not capable of gathering information on their own? One of the answers is plagiarism.

Every journalist, or at least every news portal, has their own style, has their own way of producing news. There is a vast amount of news companies in Indonesia, and it is really possible for them to serve the same news. But then again, they must have their own originality of writing them. There might be not many news companies if there's no one who reads the news. The readers are the reason why they compete to write the best version of news. And thanks to this, plagiarism can be quickly discovered.

In every country, there is a law that regulates copyrighting. According to Merriam-Webster Dictionary, copyright means "the exclusive legal right to reproduce, publish, sell, or distribute the matter and form of something (such as literary, musical, or artistic work)". In our country, the same law is also applied to make sure the works of creators are safe from being plagiarized, and even if it happens, the right law and regulation is available. It is officially written in Undang-undang Republik Indonesia no. 28 Tahun 2014 Tentang Hak Cipta, which says:

a. Penerbitan ciptaan;
b. Penggandaan Ciptaan dalam segala bentuknya;
c. Penerjemahan Ciptaan;
d. Pengadaptasian, pengaransemenan, atau pertransformasian Ciptaan;
e. Pendistribusian Ciptaan atau salinannya;
f. Pertunjukan Ciptaan;
g. Pengumuman Ciptaan;
h. Komunikasi Ciptaan; dan
i. Penyewaan Ciptaan

And that's that, not only journalists, but all of us, before we recreate something, we better do a thorough research whether our creation can be considered as a plagiarism or not, so that later on we don't have to deal with copyright law.

I think that would be all for today's post. Thank you for stopping by, have a good day! :)

Accomodation in Tour

 Hello, everyone! How are you all doing? I hope everything is going well and life is treating you good😁

Today I'm going to write about my experience of using tour accommodation. Basically, accommodation, according to the Cambridge dictionary, is a place to stay. In the term of tour and travel, it means the place that we used to stay when we spend our holiday. It could be hotels, motels, a villa, etc.

To be honest, I haven't had many experiences in using tour accommodation, I rarely go on vacation also.

The only experience I had was staying over at a hotel with one of my friends to do our assignment. The hotel was not far from our house, it was in Pasar Minggu area. It was more like a motel because the building was like a dorm. The cost was also not expensive, we stayed over for a night only for IDR 172,000, maybe that was also why the service was not that good. The owner who welcomed us was pretty humble, but he only had baggy pants and t-shirt on, well, to me, that didn't really matter. The other workers were kind too, but they wouldn't greet us first unless we did, and I think that is kind of weird.

There were not many guests when we stayed over, there was only one or two, so it was pretty quiet for us. About the room, it was pretty spacious and very clean. My friend and I liked the lighting best because it was not too dim nor too bright. The air conditioner worked well, too, even though it was not that cold to me, but my friend felt it was too cold.

For the food, we didn't order anything from the motel. We went out in the evening and bought ourselves fried rice, and in the morning we went out again to get breakfast.

For that price, I think the service and the room that we got was not that bad. Will I come back? For doing assignment only, or to have a me-time, maybe yes.

Pari Island!

 Hi😁

It's been a long time since I posted here, yeah well it's because I only post when I got assignments from my lecturers, though.

Anyway, today I want to tell you the story about my trip to Pari Island in Kepulauan Seribu. To be honest, I don't exactly remember what year I went there with my friends, I think it was around 2016 during summertime.

If you have no idea about Pari Island or is interested to know more about it, you can learn more here:

http://jakarta-tourism.go.id/visit/blog/2020/05/pari-island

Okay, let's start with the story. From what I remember, it was a 3-days and 2-nights trip. The cost at that time was relatively cheap for a 3-days trip. It was only about IDR 900,000 including meals, the snorkeling tools renting, and the boat fee.

On the first day, we left at 4 or 5 AM from home to Muara Angke Harbor in North Jakarta, because we didn't want to miss the boat. We arrived at the harbor at about 6 AM. The boat crews said that we were going to depart soon when actually we had to wait until 10 or 11 AM at that time. They were waiting until the boat is full and ready to depart. We finally left the harbor when it was about noon, and arrived on the island past noon.

The tour leader then led us to our guesthouse that was located not so far from the beach itself. It was not big, but comfortable and enough for all of us. Every room got its own AC, so it was very convenient considering the weather was sunny at that time. Local stores were also everywhere, so it wouldn't be so hard for us to buy snacks or to buy souvenirs.

On the first day of the trip, after having lunch and taking a rest for a while, we went on snorkeling. Initially, I don't really like beaches or the sea in general. First of all, I think beaches are boring. All you see is water and sand. The weather is almost always hot, and the taste of the water isn't good at all either, so, I think there is nothing good about beach. I'd prefer to go to a mountain area, with cooler weather and green surroundings. But, when I visited Pari Island, the beach was different from all the beaches I have visited before, the water was clear and nice, so I thought, maybe this was not so bad. We got on another boat to go to the middle of the sea, away from the beach. There, the instructor gave us a short guide about how to use the tools.

After wearing our life vests, we splashed into the water and started the activity by creating a circle, and then we had a drone taking pictures and videos of us. It was such a happy moment. Everyone was laughing and messing around while still paying attention to our own safety, of course. After that, we started our own exploration. We dipped our heads into the water and saw the corals and small reefs under us. There was no fish in sight. The instructor said that the fish were in the deeper sea.

There was something really interesting, funny, and a little bit scary at the same time. I remember very well when the instructor told everyone to get on the boat for a while and one of my friends was a little bit stubborn to get on the boat while everyone else who was already on the boat was asking why we were told to do so. The instructor then said, "Please don't get panicked, I just saw a baby shark under there,". That one friend who was still in the water then frantically swam toward the boat and asked everyone to help her. She cried out because she was so scared of it. She tried so hard to climb onto the boat that she got a foot cramp. We all laughed watching her struggling while still helping her because apparently the baby shark had swum away because it was scared of humans. Actually, it was also one of the reasons why I don't like seas. They're scary. We don't know what's under there and what's approaching us. So, when some of my friends splashed back into the water, I chose not to join because my anxiety said no😅

After snorkeling, we went back to our guesthouse and cleaned ourselves up. The next activity was bike-riding to another nearby beach. The beach name was Perawan Beach. I'm not sure why it was named like that. Maybe, the beach used to be untouchable for the tourists? I'm not sure. It was on low tide at that time, so the water seemed so far away. There was a swing that my friends and I used to play and take pictures. We spent the afternoon there. We also enjoyed the sunset and took beautiful pictures there. Unfortunately, I forget where I saved all those pictures, so I couldn't post it here. By the way, there wasn't a lot of tourists at that time, so we were quite free to move.

There wasn't much that we did in the evening, mainly because the kids were tired from the boat trip and that day's activity. So, we decided to sleep early and woke up early the next day.

On the next day, we went to another beach. This time, we had to walk for a few minutes to get to the beach, because the location was kind of hidden. It was the most beautiful one out of the two before. Unfortunately, I forgot the name. The beach was narrow, but it somehow felt exclusive. There were gazebos and the sand was relatively whiter than the other beaches. When we got there, it was raining, but it was okay, because we were wet already anyway. So, we continued to play around until afternoon, and then went back to our accommodation again to clean up.

In the evening, the tour leader had prepared a seafood dinner for us, located by the beach. There were crabs, lobsters, and many kinds of fish. I wondered how cheap those items were that with only IDR 900,000, we got this much of a dinner set.

The second night was well-spent. We played guitar and sang together after eating. Everyone was having fun and the wind blew softly. It was good. We went to bed around midnight, and the tour leader told us to pack up because we would have to leave in the morning.

The checkout time was 10 AM, so we already got out of the guesthouse before that time after having breakfast. We went to the island's harbor and got on the boat that would take us back to Muara Angke. The boat that we used to go to Muara Angke was way better than the previous one. In this one, there were seats just like inside a bus so we could sit properly and comfortably even though it was a little bit hot because there was no fan, we only counted on the sea wind. Meanwhile, in the previous one, we just sat freely without boundaries.

We arrived at Muara Angke safely. It was about a little bit past noon. From there, we ordered online taxis to get home.

It was a very nice experience. The beaches, the accommodations, and the tour leaders were very nice. Would I like to go back? Probably. Just like what I said before, I prefer a mountain kind of trip instead of beaches, and honestly, I didn't really enjoy the boat trip because it made me dizzy. But overall, I'm grateful that I got to experience it all.

I think that's all I can share with you guys, just so you know what you will have if you're interested to visit Pari Island.

Something Unreal

You made me see things
You made me feel things
You made me feel like I've reached it;
Something unreal;
Something never existed;
Something untouchable;
Something I shouldn't see;
Something I shouldn't feel

Yet you are not really responsible for it
Maybe it was me

Yes, it was me

My Forest

They say
There shall be rainbow
After every storm

But it's always dark and raining in my forest
No matter how long I wait for the rainbow
To be kind enough to show itself
To my poor self

Is it because of the leafy trees?
Or my forest is simply cursed?

Look At Me, Mother

Look at her, Mother
Isn't she perfect for your little girl?
Look at me, Mother
I am not perfect, but I'm still your little girl

Does Tourism Always Give Benefits?

There are so many trip destinations in Indonesia. Some of them are very famous that they attract international tourists to visit. But do you know, beside the positive impact, there are negative impacts from these wonderful places?

Let's start from the positive impacts, shall we?

  1. Economically, tourism pretty much contributes to foreign exchange as known as devisa. According to the Ministry of Tourism data, in the year 2015, foreign exchange income from tourism itself reached the number of IDR 169 trillion. Plus, most of the trip destinations in Indonesia has improved their facility, service, etc. It will attract more tourists to visit. Also, it attracts local or international investors to invest in tourism in Indonesia.
  2. Beside the economic sector, tourism also helps in the sector of social life. The more tourists visit the place, the more workers needed. Tourism helps this country decreasing the number of unemployed people. Besides, there are many tourism schools in Indonesia that produces talented and integrated workers which makes us getting foremost in the sector of tourism and hospitality.
  3. Usually the institution or company that manages a trip destination keeps the place maintained. That is why sometimes they spend a lot of money to keep it clean.
There are also the negative effects of tourism, what are they?
  1. Competitive tourism requires technology. That is why it increases the import of modern technology tools from abroad to give the best service for their visitors, sometimes in a large amount of it.
  2. I don't think there are any significant negative effects in social life. If you know any, feel free to comment down below.
  3. We all know most of Indonesians still do littering anywhere. I think this is the most common problem in all trip destinations. It's bad for our environment, we better put the litter inside our bag until we find a trash bin. We can also bring our own food and drinks so that we don't need to throw the container away.
I think that's it for today's post. Thank you for reading and have a nice day!😀
