The Ocean
Nathaniel Hawthorne
The Ocean has its silent caves,
Deep, quiet, and alone;
Though there be fury on the waves,
Beneath them there is none.
The awful spirits of the deep
Hold their communion there;
And there are those for who we weep,
The young, the bright, the fair.
Calmly the wearied seamen rest
Beneath their own blue sea.
The ocean solitudes are blest,
For there is purity.
The earth has guilt, the earth has care,
Unquiet are its graves;
But peaceful sleep is ever there,
Beneath the dark blue waves.

Title |
At first after reading the title, I predicted this poem would be
about feelings of emptiness or sadness that are so deep with ocean as a
metaphor. |
|
Paraphrase |
There are quiet caves in the ocean. Deep, silent, and solitary; Even if the waves are raging, There is nothing beneath them. The dreadful deep spirits There, they can have their communion. There are also those for whom we grieve. The adolescent, the cheerful, the
righteous The weary seamen relaxes calmly. Their own blue sea underneath them. The serenity of the ocean is a blessing, Because there is purity. The earth is guilty, and the earth is
concerned. Its tombs are eerily quiet. However, restful slumber is never there Underneath the ominous dark blue waters. |

Connotation |
Rhyme scheme: ABABCDCD Metaphor: - Caves: Refers to the graves - Fury: Refers to the existence/life Symbolism: - Rest and sleep: The words ''Rest"
and "Sleep" here is a representative of the death - Blue sea: The word "Blue sea"
here as a representative of heaven or nirvana Symbolism and metaphors: - The ocean solitude are blest: The

|
Attitude |
The attitude used is serious, melancholic, sarcastic, sorrowful,
relieved, ironic, and guilty. This tone describes how the author tells
about the ocean that so deep and wide as a graveyard for sailors, without
tombstones and garlands. Even though there is so much life up there,
there is nothing for the people we cry over. Even so the sailors could
rest in peace and have their own paradise. |

Title |
After reading the poem to the end, I realized that the title of
this poem refers to a grave without a tombstone or a wreath that is just an
ocean. The ocean that so wide and deep that it became a graveyard for
sailors. |
|
Theme |
The theme is death and isolation for sailors. Isolation here
means because the last place for the sailors to rest is in a sea that is so
deep, wide and far from other human life |
